The company was founded by Günter Grotefeld in 1960 as a sub-contractor for turning orders, which he turned into a manufacturer of special-purpose machines just a few years later. The machining components, which had originally been developed by the company itself to cover its own requirements, have been the focus of the company’s activities since the 1970s. The division CNC power unit engineering was developed in 1979. As a result, Grotefeld became the first supplier of controllable drilling units for machines in the furniture industry.
Today, around 30 members of staff develop and produce directly powered drilling, sawing and milling units, individually controllable drilling gears with preadapted spindles and CNC machining units for machines and machining centres for wood, plastics and aluminium. Grotefeld has set up its own department to deal specifically with the digitalisation of power unit technology and the interpretation of big data in contemplation of predictive maintenance.
The products made by Grotefeld are developed to meet individual customer requirements and then serially produced using a modular construction system. What is unusual here is that the company permanently maintains stocks of some 14,000 different unit parts which can be supplied to the customers, and has a vertical range of manufacture of over 90 %. A special serial number system enables such parts to be delivered within one week – or even within 24 hours in an emergency – when the customer subsequently requests delivery of the goods. This even applies to components designed and constructed in the 1970s.
Technical and commercial expertise concentrated at the company headquarters in Germany, its permanent pioneering developments, a high degree of product safety, maximum service life, the lowest life-cycle costs, a short ROI as well as top-class service are the mainstays of Grotefeld’s self-conception. This is the reason for the sustained outstanding reputation enjoyed by this medium-sized enterprise successfully managed by Carsten Clauder, which is set to offer power units for “Industry 4.0” developed together with its partners in industry as of 2019.
